Artist Statement

I am moved by the substance of our planet and its changing nature but what seems solid is fleeting and fragile, under threat. The magnificence of trees, how their lush green mantle transitions into the oranges and browns of autumn and then bare branches. The weather systems constantly circulating leave fog, rain, wind and snow, I feel it all. I want to capture this multi-sensory, interconnected life, these rhythms of ebb and flow. It is all treasure that I want to hold onto. The process of making paintings is a form of resistance to the passage of my time, I am still creating something new. I am free when experimenting with my materials and the painting evolves, like life, through choices and chance encounters. 

Each painting begins with washes of translucent acrylic colour. Layers of paint are added in an iterative response, sometimes using pastel, charcoal, printing with cellophane wrapping or mono-printed collage, until the work feels complete. Completeness for me is a sense of balance, space, complexity and painterliness. My practice is always developing as I experiment with new ways of mark-making and colour palettes. The current focus of my work is our garden, surrounding trees and the changing seasons. I want to share my love of nature and its resilience through my vibrant, semi-abstract paintings, and bring some joy and hope into an insecure world.
