Artist Statement
Life is miraculous, my own and that of plants and animals. When I am amongst mountains, by the sea on the west coast of the UK or even in a quarry I am moved by the substance of our planet and its changing nature. Layers of history pile up on the land and in our family life but what seems solid is fleeting and fragile.
The magnificence of trees, how their lush green mantle transitions into the oranges and browns of autumn and then bare branches. The weather systems constantly circulating leave fog, rain, wind and snow, I feel it all. I want to capture this miraculous, multi-sensory, interconnected life, these rhythms of ebb and flow. It is all treasure that I want to hold onto.
Painting is a way of capturing my love of life and its wonder. The process of making work is a way of fighting back as my time passes, I’m still creating something new. I am free when playing with my materials and the painting evolves, like life, through choices and chance encounters.
